MONEY TALKS

Someone said money makes the whole world go around. Does it? Well much of what we own, places we go, basic necessities of life such as food are bought by these papers and coins. Money is it a necessary evil? Every waking dawn, majority of the kenyan adults walk, commute to work to earn a living which may come end of month or day. Question is, Can one get fulfillment from work without necessarily having money involved? Think about it. The worldview is we work to earn a living in Africa, for the west, maybe leisure can be incorporated. A story is told of a young man who experimented whether he can swim to the deep end of a pool without a floater. By chance, he instead began drowning, luckily Peter, a lifeguard who was on holiday at the hotel was around. Crowds of people were gathered as some passed a stick to the boy to hold onto it to be rescued. Peter instantly dived into the water and helped the boy out. Astonished, some of the women offered him cash but Peter declined saying its his vocation. Some of the men went away murmuring of a chance they wish they had.
Yes one can do whatever work he/she loves without being paid for it. Think of it this way, If Martin Luther King Junior during the church’s reformation would have been paid by the Catholic bishops to keep still and not champion for his reformation cause would protestant churches exist today? Would we be talking about salvation? The bible acknowledges the love of money as root of all evil and has scenarios where even disciples fell to the love of money such as Judas Iscariot. Today much of churches are mushrooming all over with the urge upon the sheep to support the work of God, Man of God. A Credible leading Christian Station I listen to this week aired on the drive show (4pm-7pm) urging parents who have candidates either in Class 8 or Form 4 to rush to the Christian bookshops and buy anointing oil. After buying it, they would then take it to the pastor who would pray for it and then the candidate’s properties such as books, pens and face be anointed. Something in mind went…What? Isn’t that now being a cult where certain rituals must be done? Am not saying that Christians or the church don’t need money but when its put first before the word of God then we have lost the direction completely.
Similarly, a true believer who works primarily for the paycheck does not just face frustrations but will most likely not be in work force for that long. Believers should work hard and succeed having put their trust in the name of the Lord. The Lord provides and all silver and gold are His. He owns cattle on a thousand hills. We are so money minded that even the 10% we are REQUIRED as instructed in Malachi is painful for our wallets! Dr Myles Munroe says that he can tell your life story from your check book-It shows what your priorities are in life.
As the common saying goes
God made man, Man made money, Money made man mad.

WALKING IN TRUTH

This is the semester’s theme as stated by the chaplaincy during the first Tuesday chapel of the semester last month. As I listened carefully to the quotation of verses from the scripture my mind wondered, What truth? Whose truth? Surely such a word put in today’s contemporary world has lost meaning! Don’t get me wrong. The media reflects the society thus much of the content transmitted in our airwaves no matter how ‘dirty’ and outright lies is received as simply put ‘bearable’. Truth to me has ceased meaning. Sadly, today’s generation especially teens from 13-19 years have grown up in ‘MTV generation’ learning their values, attitudes from the same media. Walt Mueller in his book, Understanding Today’s Youth Culture says ‘The greatest power of the mass media is the power to define reality and therefore shape who our kids become’.

The other day I had a chat with some friends and some would say that Truth is relative. Okay. So I probed one of them further and he went on to give his experience where he sought for advice from his parents who replied with ‘don’t they teach you things in school?’. From it I gathered that indeed we are suffering from a generational crisis. We live in so busy caught up world that our Christian values have been blurred. Frankly speaking if we were living in some of the asian countries where Christian persecution is still there(though not publicly declared),how many of us would confess to the truth of the gospel? Very few I guess.
The back of all events, situations and dilemmas we find ourselves in today’s cosmopolitan 21st century lifestyle lies in the word of God-The Bible, ‘a book according to some has lost touch with time.’

I challenged myself and hope that other congregants were too on the need to walk the talk-in truth. Its easy for us to look at our work colleagues, students, faculty, staff and even management and see ‘less honesty’ but at the end of the day its about us as individuals to stand for the truth. Paul says in his letter to Timothy i.e. 2nd Timothy 2:15‘Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to

TODAY IS MY LAST DAY

TODAY IS MY LAST DAY

The very mention of the five-lettered word, DEATH brings chills to many. To some, it’s a curse, a bad omen. Life is a journey, we are all travelers, once a mourner told a group of us who were afraid of going into the morgue to view the body of a loved one. I agree. Sometimes we are so busy caught up in our busy lives planning for tomorrow that we lose significance of today. Death is a painful experience that no one would love to cherish. However, we get comfort knowing that we will one day rise up and reunite with Christ. Perhaps the biggest questions lingering on my mind even as I ponder on this issue is Will I have achieved my purpose? What will people remember of me when am gone? The legacy that I want to leave behind is having utilized my talents to impact the world for Christ. That my character and personality was able to influence young people to change their lost lifestyles.
In the light of today being the last day, friends are gathered at my home giving
their condolences and the eulogy is being read by a close friend, Steve.
WHAT IF?
Friends, as we gather here today to bid farewell to a brother, a son, a father whose treasure we will never find. This day is not ordinary but a celebration of a life well lived. Born from a humble home, Charles surmounted numerous childhood challenges including a near-death experience with Toilet disinfectant disguised as Juice. I met with him during our elementary school days and was fortunate to go through high school and campus with him. In those times, he striked me as a humble, honest and God-fearing person. I remember in the Muslim high school, though bible studies and fellowships weren’t allowed, we would secretly meet with other friends and read the bible. He was a determined young man and friendly to staff and students alike. Even when angry, he would walk away then moments later we would laugh as though nothing happened. Upon coming to campus, we joined the missions and evangelism team. We toured many places including Rwanda. In fact, when we were in Kigali, we went to Orphans home and he witnessed to kids (who understood a bit of Swahili).During the mission, several souls came to Christ.
Knowing that he loved media, Charles joined Daystar radio, Shine FM where he did several live programs on Radio notably Daybreak, that aired from 5am.I must say he did a lot of activities and impacted the students through the clubs and media where he served. I even hold one of his inspirational articles he wrote on Involvement. Though we are all tears today, Charles fought the good fight and finished the race.

THE LOST BROTHER

The world is looking for answers everywhere-scientists, doctors, and diviners’. In this big puzzle where can the church fit? Aren’t we supposed to be the light of the world? If we are not, then what went wrong? Materialism and infiltration of popular culture hit the church and Christians big time. William Romanowski in his book, Eyes Wide Open notes that sadly many Christians have embraced popular culture in music, arts and conformed to the patterns of the world. This is not supposed to be the case! The mentality of doing
good so that you may get the ‘rightful reward’ in form of health, wealth has led many to disappointments. Think of it this way, If God sent His son, Jesus Christ to pay the full penalty of our sins and ‘demanded’ that we repay Him. Would we be able? I bet not.
We should not be giving so that we get a reward but give as an act of love towards one another.
Like the lost brother, we the flock (believers) need to come back to the first love. The father may have the portion of land that we own (or we think we rightfully deserve) and given the other to the wayward/lost son, but think of it this way, the ultimate investment be made to the lost. Money accrued from churches should be used for the expansion of God’s kingdom through outreaches such as establishing rehabilitation centres, feeding the poor etc. I mean, how else are we going to show that we are Christians if not for our actions? I loved the fact that in class the other day, we were challenged to prove that we are guilty of being Christians. The impact of the church shall never be felt if we closed ourselves into the ‘buildings’ and ‘sanctuaries’ and Praise worship then get back home to our businesses.

If Christ would come today, wouldn’t he come to find a sleeping church? That’s for you to judge. The days of MPESA gospel on our media and churches is long gone.Fine, church needs the money, so the believers need to give more through tithes and offerings and not begged to give as it is the case. After all, The Lord of Hosts says in Malachi 3:8-10, “Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. But you ask, 'How do we rob you?' In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—the whole nation of you—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.

BEHEADED

“We are suffering from a generational crisis”, Pastor Paul Gichuhi of NPC Buruburu once said during an interview on Hope FM. He was speaking of the trend in families where many homes are fatherless-beheaded! Where did all the men go to? 21st century men retreated to the closet. Women became more vigorous coming from homes ran by their mothers. The mothers instilled the mentality that men are bad or evil. That’s one side, the other men simply became burdened by responsibilities and left it for the ladies as Dr Myles Munroe in his sermon, Dangers of Freedom noted. According to him, a man’s power comes from his position but a woman, from influence. This is true, a casual look at most corporates ranging from media to industries, many are now ran by women.-which means they not only have influence but position to top it all.
God placed authority upon man and when he mismanaged or became irresponsible, he took it away from him as stated in Genesis 3:21-24.Men have to realize this great responsibility bestowed upon them. The firm foundation on which tomorrow’s generation should be brought up is on Christ the solid rock. Yes the damage has already been done but should we as believers allow this to continue? Definitely not. Moreover, God still holds His redeeming ability to date, He can change a man whose hurt and heavy laden with responsibilities. Indeed He created Eve to become his helper and companion.
Man can never live alone as an island and sometimes swallowing up our pride and allowing ourselves to be assisted whenever need be could solve a lot of issues bedeviling families today. We need to listen to what our spouses, fiancé are saying because therein lies wisdom.
Dr Myles says a man without Christ is headless. Quite true. Here are qualities that make a real man as he said.
Works
As the bread winner, man is engineered with a vacuum with himself that urges him to work for his living. This came after the fall in the Garden of Eden where God banished them for sinning. Man was told he’ll have to sweat for his food and woman would deliver in pain. A man who doesn’t work and only sits at home to wait for the wife to bring food home would be an abomination even in the traditional African societies then.
Cultivates his wife/spouse:
A man should leave his spouse better than when they first met. He should be able to know and understand the lady very well and complement her. This varies from how she dresses to her character and personality. For example he could transform the lady from an easily tempered person to rational lady.
Protects/Security
A woman should feel safe in her home knowing that the man would do all he can to protect her and the children against attack. He should also be psychologically, emotionally, physically secure. The bond of trust would be good to avoid thoughts of cheating cases etc.
Teacher
What values will he pass to the family? What will the children learn from their father? A man who shoulders this responsibility should be bold enough to stand his ground and let it know his principles, values that the family can adopt.

RESPONSIBILITY

There is nothing in the world more destructive than irresponsibility. It’s like a plague says Dr. Myles Munroe in his video, The dangers of freedom. Think of it this way the farmers blame government when they pour milk, the government blames lack of sufficient resources, the people blame the farmers. It’s a vicious cycle. No one wants to take responsibility! God bestowed upon man stewardship and he failed. Man is the foundation of creation. Look at this way, when the blame shifts on you, why would you pass the back on someone? Its easy right? After Adam abandoned his charge over the Garden of Eden, God chased them and put an angel on guard at the entrance.
In the same way, God will take away the talents, giftings He’s given us if we don’t utilize them. Man is the head of the home but today a spot-check shows that due to the heaviness of this responsibility many end up in bars after work and return home latenight. Therefore, women are forced to fit in the shoes-and many go past ages of 40yrs as single. Result? Fatherless homes. Responsibility if not handled well can become disastrous.
Women the cause?
In the bible majority of the men fell under women. For example, Abraham had to sleep with the maid after instruction by his elderly wife Sarah. Samson was brought down by Delilah not the philistines and David kills Uriah in battle after seeing his wife Bethsheba bathing by the pool. Eve transferred responsibility to the serpent when confronted by God. So women are powerful creatures. Adam looks at the situation and defends himself saying. It is the woman you gave me..that..Blame game everywhere but when will we realize that its our individual selves that have to take the responsibility for our actions?

Unbelievers in control?
How comes majority of the unbelievers nations have stored up wealth in form of Oil products (which ultimately controls the economy).Doesn’t the bible tell us that the wealth of the wicked belongs to the righteous? How comes Africa so much endowed with minerals and natural features, variety of plant and animal species suffers so much with poverty and disease? How comes we complain God has forsaken us by bringing drought when the trees are cut? All these questions point to one thing, We Christians have become lazy. God gave us wealth but we did not take then seriously. The unbelievers came and seized it all and now control us with what was ours in the first place. We have been in deep long slumber that daylight never seems to come.
We need to be responsible starting with the simple things in life, your home, garden, environment etc. When God wants to restore responsibility we go through a process and change is never easy but wonderful. For the Israelites, they had to mark-time in the wilderness-to get rid of their wickedness before entering the land of promise.

Responsibility begins with an individual then gradually a nation. End impunity.

SLAVERY MENTALITY

People like being used whether psychologically, physically because it comes with a good feeling-So they care about my opinion, Am very important(needed). This is what it seems at first until when the process becomes repetitive for many years, then frustration creeps in and eats your soul such that you cant wait to get out of the situation. But we humans forget fast, when you are finally ‘free’ and circumstances are no longer the same but rather ‘lonely’, hard/difficult you wish you were needed again. Funny isn’t it? The Israelites were in the same situation in the wilderness a journey that would take them forty days took them forty years! They lamented at Moses for the food and water wasn’t sweeter as in Egypt. (never mind they were slaves). This stage as Dr Myles Munroe called it, a deliverance time. These guys were complaining forgetting the great miracles God had performed on them.
Ruth Ouma* an upwardly mobile sales and marketing executive never saw it coming. Working for a middle sized company in Nairobi, she had it all, the car, mortgage, insurance etc. The only problem was, she suffered from low self esteem, many of her work mates didn’t like her and would do all nasty things to make her stay locked up in her office-from gossip to reluctance to respond to her memos. It was hard. Ruth informed the management but seems her pleas fell on deaf ears. Once she stumbled upon a letter as she arrived in her office informing her to pack up and leave. She was shocked though deep in her heart relieved that the miserable work place wouldn’t see her again. She gladly left. Months after with kids needing school fees and other needs arising yet no more paychecks, Ruth suffered. She didn’t know God was preparing her for a better place.

She called up her friends and lamented how she would rather have persevered the harsh company. Her husband soon opened for her a company by her name. She took time to get clients but eventually it paid off and now she had the flexibility of working at her own hours and yet have time for her family.
The deliverance period is meant to get rid of this slave mentality where you might see as ‘good investment’ on the face value and it’s a comfort zone that encourages laziness. Most people in the work force are still in Egypt, persevering the harassment by bosses demanding they work overtime (some go home at 2am, return to work at 6am).Ironically, when given their time (after retirement) they feel that they are not needed anymore and this causes much anxiety and stress.
For God to use us, He must purify us through trials and tribulations. The road to Canaan is not easy -not so for many of us. We must purpose to use our God given potential to be happy and make others benefit too. Slavery is for the Egypt. What part of the journey are you in?

“Deliverance cannot set you free but gets rid of the slave in you.”

THE SCHIZOPHRENIC WORSHIPPER

A former neighbor of mine used to be an ardent prayer warrior. Every evening, she would meet with her friends and chat then pray loudly and intensely that some of us felt we were ‘pagans’. These persisted and with time turned out that she was under going major struggle. On ordinary days prayers would be at normal level, quiet meditation and reading of the word. As human beings, we would wish life could be ALL perfect, no struggles, pains, trials, hassles etc but unfortunately its impossible. With all these things, to most God has become like a ‘bank’ where we present our requests and in turn we ‘serve’ Him. Pain serves as a wake-up call to man, that He is not complete in his own right but a creature of God on whose Earth he stands and life he breathes daily. We can never fully understand God and why bad things happen to good people because indeed our knowledge is limited.1st Corinthians 1:25 says For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength.
Its common to forget God when we are in the happy zone and times but run
again to Him when disaster smites our way. Like a Father who disciplines his
children so as to correct them with love, so does our heavenly father. He is
there when we have ran away from His Presence.
A story is told of a man who passed on and went to heaven. During his stay, an
angel called to him and showed him some marks on a paper. The marks were of
footsteps on the road-two pairs. He saw that one pair at one point diverted
while the other was still on course. puzzled, the man asked the angel for an
explanation and the angel told him that the one that strayed was of the man
and the other the Lord’s. At that time, the man had forsaken the kingdom
turned to worldly business. But God was and still is gracious enough to stick by
us when we’ve strayed. He even sent his son to die on the cross, What greater
love than this. Pain will always be there but blessed assurance, Jesus is Mine.

WORK WORTH IT?

The society we’ve all grown in has encultured us into the grow-school-career-marriage-family-death cycle. A path we all must go through. Whether we got career counsel during our schooling days really matters upon entry into the corporate world. According to the Kenya National Youth Policy, young people form 60% of labor force but opportunities are very scarce to absorb them in the job market. Among those who are absorbed, 30% change their jobs annually for various reasons. From the friends I talk to, most end up doing what they didn’t train for or they do not feel fulfilled/passionate about it. Work refers to a means of earning your livelihood. The pay has also been a major factor in the market. If am paid little yet my labor load is more (which often is the case) then several things may concern. For example, was this my true calling? Do I need to reevaluate and pursue my interests?
Mrs. Carole Kiamah, now Director of Zinduka Africa (offers VCT, counseling) once had a lucrative job but quit to become a stay-at-home mom. Years later after her children grew a bit older say 7 years, she pursued her interests and calling in business. This is just one of the many examples of situations where the work frustrates you even with good pay and point in time comes when your own passion precedes anything else.
Imagine yourself having toiled for 55 years with a meager pay check at the end of every month, accrued loans and debts, no mortgage retiring and visualizing your survival on a peanut pension. Quite disappointing right?
Life is not about survival through the day but an enjoyment of the bountiful blessings that God has given us. He has equipped us with gifts and talents that through them people may come to His knowledge and glorify Him. Faith without deeds is dead.
How will people come to know Him, if we hid our gifts?
I am of the opinion that our calling and vocation may differ in some ways but are closely related. When God calls man to theatre and film as profession, it is that through the video productions or plays that His message maybe communicated. Further, that through the actings, His name may be glorified. Personal evaluation is very important in order to avoid taking the wrong routes of life. Well, not to mean that life should be smooth (because it has never been so).Talk to your heavenly father for the spirit of discernment to know what He wants you to do. In this way, even people around will notice that you are different in the way you do things-talk, walk, in business, workstations etc.

GREY CHRISTIANITY

This week, Nairobians put aside the ‘Maize Scandal/Coalition Stalemate’, as virtually all media aired the story of Esther Arunga (former KTN news anchor). She was instructed by Pst. Joseph Hellon of Finger of God ministries to quit her job, leave her fiancée and family and join the ‘church’ cult. Several questions ran through my mind, Is this just a case of being the sinners who first cast stone on another sinner? The Pastor called a Press conference and bluntly stated that his church does not condemn alcoholism as long as you don’t get drunk. He further posed a weird question to the journalists…show me a Christian ugali, restaurant etc. To top it all, some months ago the two were right here in Daystar proclaiming their salvation and Infact Pst. Hellon lead several students to Christ!
The story made headlines for one main reason, the world is looking at the ‘born again believers’ for direction, the church for advice instead what have we done? Embarrassed Christ by being luke warm and confining to the patterns of the world that Paul in Romans 12:2 admonishes us not to. Esther Arunga was inarguably one of the few media personalities to whom the public held in awe in terms of morality and to some she was a role-model. She is human just as the rest of us and we have all fallen short of the glory of God through sins. But we have hope that through the death and resurrection of Christ, we are all redeemed.
Though written many years ago the bible is still relevant to today’s generation. It talks clearly about issues to do with morality, conduct and generally our spiritual walk. What has happened in the recent years is that Christianity has been relegated to ‘personal’ therefore relative terms. For example if I think alcohol is not bad, my ‘bible’ will literally say…a little wine for thy stomach’s sake. There is a new-age freedom from the West that has fast caught up the contemporary society-people living in urban towns, with busy lifestyles, making money being priority. As for basics in church-life, if the Sunday school teacher didn’t do his/her part, too bad.
My point is as young people ready to step out into the already confused world and acquired knowledge of the word, we need to radically impact the society. Islam for one has never been ‘ambiguous’ in terms of their belief and practices. Ask a young estate boy, which people blow themselves up with bombs? Who is their prophet? And you’ll know that Muslims are serious about their religion and willing to die for it.(even for wrong reasons).
The times of sitting in the fence are over. We are called the slat and light of the world, but if a light is hidden under the bed how will the room be lightened up?
In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16

RELIGION:OPIUM FOR THE POOR?

Many theologians concur that God sometimes punishes His people because He loves them and wouldn’t want them to go astray. Our African continent is plagued with many misfortunes majorly poverty, hunger and disease. This is despite the fact that we are endowed with diverse wildlife, exotic vegetation, numerous minerals including Gold and we are religious! Infact history has it that we had knowledge of God long before the missionaries stepped into the continent. So why all the suffering? I asked a friend of mine and all he said was, Religion is the opium for the poor. Really? It has a way of suggesting, ‘Suffer here, but you will enjoy life in eternity in heaven’. Am getting ahead of myself here.
Africa has a lot of talents especially the younger generation. People who have giftings in music, sports, arts, sciences, among others. What have we done? We have let the west exploit us with possibility of scholarships abroad. Young ‘geniuses’ from poor families have been ‘shipped’ to UK and United States of America, enrolled in universities and later get jobs and develop economies of the host country. Most end up not coming back home.
Since the European, Asian and North American nations have invested in Africa, they have a say on how our governments will run, they even decide what amount of aid(loan) we will get. Our politicians with all their greed have dutifully bowed to their demands just to get the money and later laud it in their pockets. They do not even pay taxes which every hardworking citizen does.

The Church has also adapted materialism concept, a walk to town will show you most if not all buildings in city centre have sprouting churches. The gospel has been turned into money making business with anointing oils being sold for ‘protection’ or ‘financial miracles’. This in turn has left the sheep hopeless and only come for services seeking to fill their spiritual void with enough ‘fuel’ to take them for another extra week till Sunday or Saturday. The result of all these, mixed theology where the sheep cannot tell which voice is calling out to them-The shepherd or the enemy. No wonder many have fallen into the traps of Islam. The fact is Islam has spread much in slum (poverty) areas. Religion may not take you to heaven but only through Jesus Christ as He is the way, the truth and the life.
Consider the story of the wayward son in Luke, he took his share of inheritance went into far away land and spent it all till he had no more. He had to survive by eating with the pigs. But once he had enough, he decided to return home.(and even become one of the father’s servants if he had to). What does His father do? He welcomes Him home and prepares a feast in His honor. God in the same way has set Africa apart, to impact the world with the gospel. We have forsaken Him and gone for priorities that are not worth our time-money, pleasure, politics etc. Yet He still calls and waits on us to turn back to Him before its too late. The question is, Will we hacken to His voice?

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me”.
Revelations 3:20(NIV)

Who's the school's Principal?

I live in a beautiful eastern school, whose teachers can get away with any form of impunity.Sad as it is,the Co-principal yesterday decided to suspend three of the teachers for getting involved in money laundering...millions by the way.Apparently the funds that are to be used by needy students for the schooling somehow was diverted to either of the teacher's homes or just dissapeared mysteriously.I mean the twist of this story unfolds and changes everyday.Anyway back to the drama,so the co-principal(after consulting the other co-principal)comes out fire blazing and categorically states in front of live camera and radio microphones...I suspend the two teachers..Mr. Mahindi Kibet and Mr. Masaba Pesa for so and so..thats at lunchtime.
Evening comes and the cameras that ran the press conference at CBD are quickly rolled onto the public tv sets. After the bulletin, the presenter comes live again with a quick rejoinder that the co-principal has denied being consulted and thus affirms that he is the appointing authority of teachers in that school.
My oh my my minds quickly reads this is gonna look awkward on the other...The newsmen do their best.act as referee, they rush to the offices and home towns of the two teachers(who have also learnt of their suspension via tv sets). They vehemently deny any letter of suspe but they rejoin..HAVENT HEARD FROM THE APPOINTING AUTHORITY.
So what next....All these and more dramas unfold in this school. Will the two co-principals ever work together?Time will tell.
